Ares Armor Ambi Safety Selector

By EBBS on February 15, 2014
At the Ares Armor booth on the first day of SHOT Show 2014
I came across a new spin on the growing ambidextrous safety selector
market. The Ares Armor GAVEL ambi safety selector is a polymer made
(partnered with a steel shaft) 55 short throw, variable position lever
with the ability to customize either side (regardless of whether youre
right or left handed) to best fit your comfort preference.

For instance, due to the length of my thumb I often have a difficult
time getting it back far enough to put the gun on SAFE quickly so Ill
often use my trigger finger to make it safe and then my thumb to release
into FIRE mode. The Gavel allows me to position the weak side of the
selector in a position that makes it easier to find and provide
paramount leverage for a speedy intuitive click into SAFE.
Time will tell how sturdy the plastic (this is what naysayers call
polymer of any kind) parts with set screws will be but due to the
location closer to the shooter rather than perhaps a part with this
chemistry out front I have no reason to believe it wont stand up to
some abuse. Ive especially enjoyed this addition to my CivTactical AR-15 pistol
because of how close it gets pulled in to my shoulder thanks to the
short buffer tube. The selector is easy to engage even with a weaker
hand thanks to positioning my arm and elbow completely tucked. Not to
mention it looks pretty stinkin cool with the III% logo on one of the
levers.
Thanks to the Ares Armor crew for giving me an early opportunity to put The Gavel to use. The Gavel ambi safety selector is currently out of stock on their website
(as of 2/15/14) but theyve got a sweet deal going where if you do a
review on The Gavel safety selector and submit it they will refund the
purchase price.
GAVEL SAFETY SELECTOR SPECIFICATIONS:
Made for the AR-15 / .308 LR weapon platforms the Gavel is a
variable position short throw safety selector. It can be set in 30
degree increments to the users preference and has a throw of 55
degrees.
Each Gavel comes with both short and long high strength polymer
levers, steel shaft, high strength American made screws and appropriate
allen key. All parts of the Gavel are 100% made in the USA.
The Gavels levers interface with the shaft with a gear-like
spline system to ensure equal pressure and longevity of strength. The
weight of the throw is equally distributed across this system allowing
the selector to be both extremely light weight and durable.
Ares Armor Gavel Ambidextrous Safety
By Shadowhunter985 on 02-11-201403:58 PMToday I received my Ares Armor Gavel Safety Selector. I would call this a
short throw selector as it has a 55* throw. It took about 10 mins to
change and was very straight forward to put in. I am very impressed with
this item. ME and a group of friends meet once every other week to
have our version of a shooting competition. The last few times we have
been shooting with gloves on. And I dont have very warm shooting gloves
so I have been using normal winter gloves making it harder to flip off
the safety. Now with the Gavel last weekend things changed. The short
throw of the Gavel made it easy with winter gloves. Definitely happy
with this product. I will be ordering this for my other rifles too.

I love my Uzi, but live in California where it seems that just
the mere sight of anything resembling an Uzi gets trouble brewing. So
with that said, I got back into AR's, but fat man hands and ambidextrous
safeties do not mix. I tried a short throw ambi safety from Ares Armor
in California. It is a metal barrel for the safety portion itself with
the safety levers themselves being polymer. The inside of the safety
barrel where the polymer levers enter the barrel is a recessed in an
almost gear like fashion with the male gear end being on the polymer
levers. I am able to grip the PG without having my hand gouged with the
ambi lever because of its short throw ability and ability to place the
geared polymer lever in the desired position rather than standard
configuration. It is positive, but smooth with both levers securely
fastened with screws into the barrel.

Product review of Ares Armor The Gavel Ambidextrous Safety selector. Order number ORD1392259106. Just
finished the machining on my Ares Armor 80% polymer lower. In
purchasing the lower parts I was looking for a couple different things.
First I wanted the WOW factor. Something none of my friends had on their
ARs. Next I wanted functionality. Something that I can adapt to my
needs to make this gun unique.
I have always been able to shoot
rifles either right or left handed so it always bothers me then rifles
do not have ambidextrous controls. When building my AR pistol, I wanted
everything ambidextrous that I could get.
When I read the product
description of The Gavel, I was intrigued as I have never understood why
there were not more safety selectors out there with less then 90
degrees of throw AND adjustability of the angle that the individual
levers can be set at. I was able to set the selector on the left side of
the receiver to be horizontal when in the SAFE position. This made the
change from FIRE to SAFE very easy for me.
On the right side of the
receiver I was able to set the selector to the 7 o'clock position when
in the SAFE position. This put it in the perfect position for my left
thumb to move it in either direction.
While I am able to shoot
either right or left handed my thumbs do not work the safety in the same
way. I must have a different range of motion from one thumb to another.
In building this pistol I was going for the lightest weight build I
could pull off. Now not break the bank with titanium light but as light
as I could find. The polymer selector switches fit into this perfectly.
As the instructions recommend do not forget to use Loctite on the
threads of the bolts that hold the selector arms on. The arms are
indexed as is the shaft and I would not want this to come loose and ruin
the indexing teeth.
I was also happy to see The Gavel used 2
different sizes of selector arms. The larger arm works perfect on the
right side of the receiver and the smaller arm worked great on the left
side. Again my thumbs really work differently.
No product review
would be complete without a review of the customer service. I have
e-mailed Ares Armor 3 different times since I have been doing business
with them. Their customer service is second to none as I had even gotten
responses back on the weekend!
Products shipping over 1/2 way
across the country are always in my mail box in under a week. Their
packaging is very good and professionally done.
I am so sold on The Gavel Ambidextrous Safety that I would put it on my Mother's AR (if she had one that is, maybe someday!).
Ares Armor Gavel Review

I recently picked up a new Safety Selector from Ares Armor and wanted to provide some feedback.
Up front I wanted to say that I paid for the selector - however, Ares is
trying to get reviews of the product out on the internet, and so are
offering to "refund the purchase price" - if you do a thoughtful review
of their product. I don't know if I will get a refund or not - but
wanted to add that disclaimer and that it is at least a partial
motivating factor for me to do the review. It is not however
influencing my review.
I suppose it was my fault that I didn't read the product description
closely enough when I purchased it - but I didn't realized that the
selector levers are polymer. The shaft is steel, but the levers are
polymer.
Sorry that the pics aren't the best.. but I'm not a great photographer.
What comes in the package:

You need to reuse your existing selector detent and spring as one is not provided in the kit.
One interesting part of the kit is that the levers can be position
independently from the shaft, and can be rotated. So instead of being
at 90 degree when being on safe and rotating to 145 degree to fire.. you
can have it be at ~100 and 155. This is accomplished by having a
pattern that allows you to position the selector and different angles
compared to the shaft.

I am slightly worried about the polymer levers and the way they attach
to the shaft. It seems that the points on the levers may round overtime
when being continually worked and that eventually the levers may spin
without turning the shaft. It remains to be seen if it is an issue or
not.
So far, the fact that they are polymer levers isn't an issue. There is a
very slight bit of flex in they as it clicks into the fire position.
If you continue with additional pressure, you can feel the flex. So far
not a huge deal - but we'll see how it holds up long term.
Here is the shaft installed in the receiver:

Once the center shaft is installed, the levers are rotated and put into
the position you like. For me, the traditional 90 degree on safe was
the best. Then when taking off the safety, it rotates 55 degrees into
the fire position.

For me the ambidextrous lever is just about right. Not too big to get
in the way, yet big enough that I can always catch it with my trigger
finger to flick the safety back on.

One final picture to give you and idea of the primary selector size.

Overall, I really like the 55 degree throw from safe to fire. I'm not
yet entirely sure about the polymer levers and their attachment to the
shaft if that will hold up long term. The detent stops are firm and
crisp - but not too difficult to get the selector to move. I'm going to
try it out in a 4 day course at the beginning of next month which
should give me ample time to work out if there are any issues with it.
Ares Armor Gavel Ambidextrous Safety Selector
http://firearmsinsider.tv/reviews/ares-armor-gavel-ambidextrous-safety-selector
By Devin Blystone on March 4, 2014When I got the Ares Armor Gavel out of the package I realized that there
were two different sized safety selectors. I also noticed the sprocket
design that allows the user to mount it at an angle that is easy and
comfortable for them. As long as you can take something apart and put it
back together you should have no problem installing this on your own
rifle. It even comes with the tool to screw ittogether with(as it
should). Once you have the shaft installed then its time to figure out
how you want it set up. The safety selectors can be mounted in 30 degree
increments and theyre swappable.
I liked having it mounted so that when it was disengaged, the selector
was vertical. I can manipulate the small one with my dominant hand so I
like to have the larger one mounted on my offside. I found it to be
easier to use with my offhand. Its also designed to be a short throw
safety selector. You only have to actuate it 55 degrees instead of the
regular 90. The only thing that I didnt like was that the safety
selectors were made of polymer. Im sure that theyre strong and will
last for a long time, it just takes some time to get used to. I have
recommended it to everyone I know with an AR and some friends without
one.
