The Schumer gun control bandwagon doubled in size today. It seemed to show the double-barreled approach is bigger and louder than one.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer appeared at a news conference today with his second cousin removed, comic/actress Amy Schumer. Their message had drama, but certainly no mystery. They were calling for more gun control.

The new Schumer gun control team is a Hollywood script perfect for the Obama administration. The two played major supporting roles as they stood before cameras and reporters with a sign beside them which read, “Enough is Enough.” “We’re here to say enough is enough,” said the senator. “We can’t just sit back and allow mass shootings to become commonplace.” How many breaking news flashes will it take for Congress to act?”

Chuck Schumer is the senior senator from New York who has been endorsed to replace Harry Reid as Senate Democratic Leader. He acknowledged the big media turnout today was not there to see and hear him. “I have a lot of press conferences but I almost never get this many people.”

The interest was in Amy Schumer, star of her own current box office hit movie, “Trainwreck.”

You could see this kind of thing coming down the tracks immediately after gunman John Houser, killed two and injured nine others viewing “Trainwreck” in a Lafayette, Louisiana movie theater on July 23, 2015. Amy expressed her condolences on Twitter that night saying her “heart was broken.”

The Hollywood and political connections certainly were a trigger for the Schumer gun control team. Today, Amy Schumer said, “My heart goes out to Jillian and Mayci, to the survivors, and anyone who was tied to this tragic, senseless, and horrifying actions of this man who shouldn’t have been able to put his hands on a gun in the first place. I’m not sure why this man chose my movie to end these two beautiful lives and hurt nine others, but it was very personal for me.”

Chuck Schumer called for more gun control measures following the Dylann Roof shootings in the Emanuel AME Charleston church in June. He wanted Brady-like background checks on private gun sales, limits on magazine sales, and increased reporting into the federal database.

Cousin Amy called the senator’
s measures “sensible.” She added, “These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence, but I can promise you they won’t be my last.”

Sounds like the Schumer gun control team may be thinking of a sequel.

We know much more about the the man who turned a screening of a popular comedy movie into a real-life horror scene. His name was John Russell “Rusty” Houser. He was 59-years old. He was a law school graduate with a history of legal and mental problems, and was considered a “drifter.”

John Houser killed 2 young women. Nine more moviegoers became his shooting victims. Four of those shot have already been treated and released from Lafayette, Louisiana hospitals. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craig says of the five wounded who are still hospitalized, one of them is listed in critical condition. The other four are in stable condition.

The handgun John Houser used to shoot 11 people was a Hi-Point .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol. The firearm was one he purchased legally at a Phenix City, Alabama pawn shop in February 2014.

John Houser resided in Phenix City before he was evicted from his home. The sheriff says it was a place Houser later vandalized. In 2008, his wife at the time got a restraining order against him. Houser also spent time in Columbus, Georgia, and was a one-time political candidate there.

Police know he traveled about 500 miles to Lafayette, Louisiana early this month. He had been staying in a motel. Houser had an uncle die in Lafayette 35 years ago, but had no other known connections in the area.

According to the Louisiana State Police, he had recently borrowed $5,000 from his mother, but needed money. Authorities believe he may have also gotten food and money from a church in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Police don’t know why John Russell “Rusty” Houser opened fire in these Louisiana movie theatre shootings. But they have pieced together what he did at the Grand 16. They do not believe this was a spontaneous act.

• Houser bought a ticket to the 7:10 showing of the new romantic comedy, “Trainwreck.”

• He sat quietly in the second to last row, and was one of about 25 people seeing that movie.

• For about 20 minutes, he acted like any other patron would.

• Witnesses say while he created a scene of chaos, Houser was very calm and quiet.

• One man in the theatre told Keifer Sanders, “A guy just stood up and started opening fire. The guy was just kind of at ease, just standing there, just shooting,” Sanders said.

• Randall Mann’s 21-year-old daughter was sitting in the same row. She first wondered if the popping sounds were part of the movie. When she saw the muzzle flashes, she hit the floor and joined the crowd trying to escape.

• One person played dead once the shooting began. One heroic teacher was said to have gotten shot as she laid on top of another.

• John Houser had two 10-round magazines. One person was shot four times. Out of 20 rounds, police say he methodically shot 11 people, not including himself.

• John Houser left the theatre though a side door. He headed toward a 1995 Lincoln he parked near the exit. But he saw police, and re-entered the building and reloaded his firearm. He fired off three more rounds, the last one to his own head.

• A police search of John Houser’s motel room and vehicle found disguises such as wigs, and glasses. He even swapped the license plate on his car in case he’d escaped.

Already, the first public gun grab has been announced by a politician. Louisiana State Representative Terry Landry, Sr., a Democrat, wasted no time calling a press conference seeking more strict gun control. Landry said, “It’s our job as legislators to close the loopholes in these gun laws.”

Police say last night’s Lafayette, Louisiana movie theatre shootings have left at least 3 people dead, including the gunman. At least another seven people were injured. The shooter is described as a 58-year old white male. Police did not reveal his identity. They say he had an old criminal record. However, they were withholding further information about him due to the ongoing investigation.

The shootings took place at the Grand Theatre 16 movie complex, one of two movie theatres in the town of roughly 120,000 residents, located about 60 miles southwest of Baton Rouge. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft told reporters that around 7:30 p.m., his department received reports of a shooting at the theatre.

About 100 people were inside the Grand Theatre 16 at the time of the incident. The tragedy took place around 20 minutes into the showing of the new film, “Trainwreck.” A man allegedly entered the theatre by himself. Then standing in the aisle, he began shooting with a handgun. Witnesses said he did not say anything.

Some moviegoers who heard the loud popping sounds, thought it was a part of a movie, or came from a firecracker. Various witnesses described the scene as chaotic. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal shared stories of heroism he heard took place inside the movie theatre.

The gunman killed at least two people and injured at least another seven before he turned the gun on himself and took his own life. Four Lafayette police officers entered the theatre, only to find the shooter dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police Chief Craft said they had no reason to believe the shooter acted with anyone else, or that he had targeted any other locations besides the Grand Theatre 16. Craft told reporters, “We don’t know whether it was a random act, whether it was a domestic situation.” Police did not know the motive of the shooter, whether he was targeting certain moviegoers. or randomly shooting people.

The shooting victims were ages from teens up to their 60s. All seven injured were being treated at local hospitals. Their medical conditions were reported to range from minor injuries to life-threatening.

After midnight, police found the vehicle believed to belong to the shooter. A suspicious package was inside. The area was evacuated. The Louisiana State Police Bomb Squad was investigating.

The Louisiana movie theatre shootings happened three days after the third anniversary of the attack by James Holmes who killed 12 and injured 70 more, opening fire in an Aurora, Colorado movie theatre.

Amy Schumer, the star of the movie, “Trainwreck” acknowledged her condolences to the victims. Standing outside a hospital for a press conference, Governor Jindal told the media, “This is an awful night for Lafayette. This is an awful night for Louisiana. This is an awful night for the United States.”
